Paris is a city that lends itself to daydreaming, to walking the streets and imagining all sorts of magic, a quality that Woody Allen understands perfectly. Midnight in Paris is Allen’s charming reverie about just that quality, with a screenwriter hero named Gil (Owen Wilson) who strolls the lanes of Paris with his head in the clouds and walks right into his own best fantasy. Gil is there with his materialistic fiancĂ©e (Rachel McAdams) and her unpleasant parents, taking a break from his financially rewarding but spiritually unfulfilling Hollywood career–and he can’t stop thinking that all he wants to do is quit the movies, move to Paris, and write that novel he’s been meaning to finish. You know, be like his heroes in the bohemian Paris of the 1920s. Sure enough, a midnight encounter draws him into the jazzy world of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Picasso and Dali, and an intense Ernest Hemingway, who promises to bring Gil’s manuscript to Gertrude Stein for review. Gil wakes up every morning back in the real world, but returning to his enchanted Paris proves fairly easy. In the execution of this marvelous fantasia, Allen pursues the idea that people of every generation have always romanticized a previous age as golden (this is in fact explained to us by Michael Sheen’s pedantic art expert), but he also honors Gil’s need to find out certain truths for himself. The movie’s on the side of gentle fantasy, and it has some literary/cinematic in-jokes that call back to the kind of goofy humor Allen created in Love and Death. The film is guilty of the slackness that Allen’s latter-day directing has sometimes shown, and the underwritten roles for McAdams and Marion Cotillard are better acted than written. But the city glows with Allen’s romantic sense of it, and Owen Wilson has just the right nice-guy melancholy to put the idea over. A worthy entry in the Cinema of the Daydream.

The curiosity here will be how the Weinstein Co. plans to handle the film’s distribution. The audience for this kind of fare is small if visible at all, but I am assuming they have confidence they can reach an older audience based on the massive success of The King’s Speech. I don’t see how this can possibly appeal to today’s modern audiences, which are used to motion capture 3D, transforming robots and talking toys, but if anyone should be up to the challenge it would be the Weinstein’s.
In terms of filmmaking, The Artist is closely related to Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 classic Modern Times in that it uses sound effects and a late moment of dialogue (a song and dance scene in the case ofModern Times), but is otherwise completely silent. It’s a tough task, primarily because it places limits on the filmmaker, limits a filmmaker of the modern era never has to think about and yet Hazanavicius has, for the most part, successfully navigated this tricky mine field and put together a decent film. However, 80 or so years ago I don’t think it would have been hailed as anything more than the norm.
Taking place from 1927-1931, the story begins as silent films are about to be replaced by talkies. At the center of the story is Hazanavicius’ OSS 117 star Jean Dujardin as George Valentin, a major silent film star whose appearance mirrors that of Clark Gable, Trevor Howard or William Powell more than any silent actor that comes straight to mind, though Douglas Fairbanks is probably the closest comparison when it comes to his career.
George’s star is about to be tested as the age of talkies is upon him, but after scoffing at the idea, the proud silent star is soon pushed aside as the cinema makes way for a new kind of star. Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) has burst on the scene and is ready to light the box-office on fire. Audiences fall in love with talking motion pictures and she’s an instant hit. George’s response is to try making a silent film on his own. He fails. Combine this failure with the stock market crash and he finds himself sad, alone and forgotten.
Primarily a drama, The Artist follows the lives of these two stars as they move in opposite directions. However, it isn’t all serious notes as this film has several moments of humor with a lot of credit to whomever trained George’s dog (either named Uggy or Jack), a Jack Russell Terrier that immediately reminded me of Nick and Nora’s Asta from The Thin Man.
Highlights I personally took away include an excellent nightmare scene in which George dreams the world is full of sound, but he has lost his voice. It’s not only a highly entertaining and funny scene, but it’s a scene that gets to the heart of the story in a matter of seconds. A running “play dead” trick involving George’s dog also never fails to get a laugh.
The primary success on the part of Hazanavicius, though, is making sure the story never gets too big for its own good. Generally, silents benefit from a simple story with top notch actors doing the rest and this one falls right in line. But in that same sense editing remains important and this film gets a bit ponderous in its second and third acts as George’s downfall begins to take up much of the running time, dragging the film down where it previously moved at a pretty quick clip.

A haunting portrait of Lucy, a young university student drawn into a mysterious hidden world of unspoken desires. A haunting portrait of Lucy, a young university student drawn into a mysterious hidden world of unspoken desires. Why anyone would want to do a down beat Australian version of BELLE DE JOUR is hard to figure and why they are being encouraged after the event is even more so. File this one in the same bin as EVERLASTING SECRET FAMILY ‘ wants to be shocking & profound but ends up dumb/nasty.
The sensational elements mainly consist of Browning getting further undressed each time out and introduced to more humiliation. However the viewer is distracted by wondering how she manages to fit in her tertiary maths course, a day time job collating documents that you’d expect the machine in the same room to do, second job at the cafe, visiting a dried out case who has museli and gin for breakfast, getting picked up in bars and hiring on as a fetish object. Lets not start in on why she burns the hundred dollar note in sustained shot, like the opening with white coat shoving a tube down her throat. The photography is quite pro and cutting rare ‘ most scenes play without any inserts. As for the performers, our sympathy for the actors’ humiliation overrides any criticism of their performances.
French provocateur Catherine Breillat (‘Fat Girl,’ ‘Bluebeard’) continues her deconstruction of classic fairytales with her latest, ‘The Sleeping Beauty.’ Cursed at birth by an evil fairy, Anastasia is destined to prick her finger and die at the age of sixteen. When three feckless fairy sisters discover this they hatch a plan to alter the curse: rather than die, Anastasia will sleep for 100 years. While in slumber, Anastasia comes of age through a series of vivid dreams, filled with charming princes, dwarves, gypsies and magical creatures. When she reawakens a fully-formed adolescent, she finds that in real life, happy endings are more elusive than in our fantasies.
Beautifully designed by Francois-Renaud Labarthe and photographed by the great Denis Lenoir (‘Carlos’), this constantly surprising, thought-provoking investigation of the female psyche reaffirms Breillat as one of the most inventive and risk-taking of contemporary French auteurs.
‘Your vagina will not be penetrated. Your vagina is a temple.’ With these words, Sleeping Beauty establishes the ground rules and sets the scene for a bizarre nightmare. The film is set in Australia but conceived in a high, contemporary European style: it is perpetually a surprise to realise the dialogue is in English and not French or Austrian-accented German.
It is technically elegant, with vehemence and control, though often preposterous, with the imagined classiness of high-end prostitution and art-porn cliches of secret in grand chateaux: shades of Eyes Wide Shut.
Author-turned-director Julia Leigh has certainly made an assured debut, which evidently owes nothing to Jane Campion who has ‘presented’ this movie in some kind of Executive Mentor capacity. Instead, Leigh aims for the occult ritual of Bu’uel and the formal exactitude of Haneke: rigorously framed and composed shots.
Emily Browning gives a fierce and powerful performance, which should put her in the running for the festival’s best actress prize; she is Lucy, a student who takes part-time jobs to pay her tuition. These include medical experimentation ‘ an almost unwatchable, and crucially penetrative process in which a tube is inserted into her gullet ‘ and occasional prostitution. From here, Lucy is inducted into a niche industry: elderly gentlemen in tuxedos hold dinner parties and pay beautiful young women to wait on them, almost naked. Her success leads to a lucrative ‘sleeping beauty’ gig. She is drugged and these ageing, sagging sensualists can do whatever they wish to her naked body, except penetration. But Lucy becomes obsessed with knowing what is being done to her.
The movie’s emotional seriousness consists in Lucy’s unhappy backstory: it is not merely a need for cash that has led her to this, but a kind of trauma and self-hate. She evidently had a painful and complex relationship with an agoraphobic drug addict called Birdmann (Ewen Leslie); he was and is clearly in love with her and, on her many visits, her affectionate friendship is complicated by unexpressed guilt at not feeling the same way or wanting to sleep with him.

All of this Browning suggests in her sulky pouts, her suppressed tears, her angry blankness: especially when talking to her alcoholic mother on the phone. It all leads to the grotesque situation of lying in a drugged stupor for men who wish to indulge in a necrophile-rape fantasy. The sleeping beauty of the original fable fainted on pricking her finger on a spinning wheel, an image of a moment’s daring combined with one of women’s work and torpid docility. Lucy is certainly doing women’s work: but what is she doing? Will she wake up to what is happening?

The stomach-turning ” scenes themselves brutally show how unlovely is the ageing male body: and the penises here are pitifully unable even to attempt penetration. To some, the situation may call to mind Almodovar’s Talk to Her or perhaps the denouement of Dennis Potter’s Brimstone and Treacle. But there is force and originality in Leigh’s work. Sleeping Beauty is an impressive technical display, though no more than the sum of its parts.

The Cars of 007 – James Bond (Part 5 – the 90s)
The 1980s had been a strange decade for the James bond franchise. Roger Moore, perhaps the most beloved actor to portray Bond, had seen his reign end with 1985s “A View To A Kill” and was subsequently replaced with new heir apparent Timothy Dalton. The transition from Moore to Dalton happened very smoothly, there was no down time in the release schedule of movies and it seemed as though MGM wanted to keep the franchise running smoothly despite the re-casting of the lead character. Perhaps what no one behind the scenes had anticipated was the lackluster reception Dalton, and his first Bond movie “The Living Daylights”, received at the box office and from audiences in general. While the popular argument is that Timothy Dalton wasn’t good enough to lead the franchise or open a movie on his own, even having the Bond name behind him, the truth is a bit clearer in hindsight; the franchise and the character of James Bond needed a rest. Audience’s tastes were changing, and the once popular “super spy” style espionage/action movies were being supplanted by broad comedy and muscle bound action heroes. So, Bond as a character and a movie franchise was put into hibernation by MGM for the foreseeable future. It would be five years before Bond would resurface, updated for the 90s in every possible way: stories based off of more recently global headlines, a new actor in the title role, and of course – a compliment of the best available cars in the entire world with which to entice new fans while saving the planet.
The series resurfaced too much fanfare with 1995s “Golden Eye”. Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, until this point known mostly for his role as TV sleuth “Remington Steele”, had taken on the role* and in doing so had taken the responsibility of making Bond “cool” again. The film features three show stopping vehicles: A BMW Z3 roadster, Ferrari 355 GTS and of course, an Aston Martin DB 5.
The Aston martin was viewed as essential, this film was supposed to be the big, splashy, modernized debut of a new Bond for the 90s, and it was very much those things, but it also had to contain some of the more notable Bond trademarks and the use of an Aston Martin DB5 acknowledged the characters legacy nicely. The Ferrari 355 GTS is driven in the movie by Bond’s nemesis, Xenia Onatopp, the sadistic bodyguard of the film’s main villain. While both the Ferrari and the Aston martin are noteworthy enough to be considered the main attraction in a lesser movie, the real star here is the BMW Z3 Roadster. According to carenthusiast.com;
“The car was kept in utter secrecy. Not a photograph became published, not even from the filming sessions that were done in public.
For the filming, BMW provided two handmade pre-production models. Additionally, there were transportation costs and accompany guards, so that no photographs would get into the hands of the press prior to the official premiere of the films and the car.”
For the second Bond feature of the 90s, 1997s “Tomorrow never Dies”, further BMW’s were employed to up the ante established in “Golden Eye”. The main vehicles used by Bond in this film are both BMW in origin: A BMW 750iL, BMW Cruiser R 1200 C motorcycle, both used by Bond at various points in the film. The agreement between MGM and BMW was a smashing success thanks to the BMW Roadster being used in “Golden Eye”, and both parties were interested in maintaining the relationship. While the car is used in a great sequence involving Bond remote driving it off a parking garage. The BMW motorcycle was used for a high speed pursuit with Bond and his female ally handcuffed together no less, as the pair escapes the headquarters of the film’s villain by leading a chase that takes them all over Bangkok, from the crowded streets, dead end alleys and even the rooftops of various buildings. The chase culminates in the pair making a death defying leap across a crowded street by going rooftop to rooftop.
Since the franchise was rebooted halfway through the decade, there was only time to film three Bond films before the end of the decade. 1999′s “The World Is Not Enough” was the final entry for the decade and it upped the action ante from the previous two Brosnan led Bond movies considerably. It is also accused by many fans as being an uninspired relapse back to the winking Roger Moore era films, but that’s really open to debate.
Continuing the relationship established with “Golden Eye”, MGM and BMW once again collaborated on the vehicles used in the film. This time, Bond would use a BMW Z8 Roadster, an update of the Z3 from “Golden Eye”, an even more impressive vehicle than the Z3. Some of its official specifications: A 4.9L V8 S62 engine, six speed manual transmission, and the ability to reach speeds of 299 km/h.
In the film, the car is shown numerous times, until it is sliced in half (!) by a helicopter equipped with tree cutting saws. The car was produced from 2000 to 2007 and during the introduction of the car for sale; BMW promised prospective buyers that there was a stockpile of replacement parts available, 50 years’ worth to be exact. According to Wikipedia, “Due to the limited volume of Z8 production, all elements of the car were constructed or finished by hand, thereby compounding the importance of ongoing manufacturer support for the type. The price point and production process allowed BMW to offer custom options to interested buyers.” You too could drive the same car Bond drives – and when you’re done saving the world, you could be confident in knowing that there was a stockpile of parts to repair your spy mobile.
Part 6 of this series will conclude with the newest James Bond movies, released in the 2000s.
