In “Just Go With It,” whose title really has to be read as a plea from the filmmakers, given all the leaps of faith they want you to take with a movie that’s really more like a loose improv session, or an extended party game ‘ oh wait, what was I saying’
Aniston plays Katherine, a single mom working as an assistant to Sandler’s successful plastic surgeon, and she’s got the frumpy wardrobe to prove it. If you’re inclined to buy the premise, the way for a nerdy guy to bed an endless succession of great-looking chicks is to pretend he’s married. I gather it’s all part of the feminine mystique as defined by boobs (as in boys, not breasts) that a wedding ring and a bad marriage are the ultimate aphrodisiac. Right.
Anyway, Dr. Danny has finally met a gorgeous girl (Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl Brooklyn Decker) who likes him even without the wedding ring. Since he really likes this girl back, when she discovers his fake gold band and declares she won’t date a married man, he undertakes a cover-up of Watergate proportions to try to keep her. The plan involves getting Katherine to pose as his wife, conscripting her kids, concocting a divorce, funding a “Pretty Woman” makeover and before you can say, “Huh?” the new girlfriend, the fake ex, the fake kids and the fake ex’s fake flame (Nick Swardson) are off to Hawaii to swim with dolphins. Don’t ask.
The whole idea somehow seemed more plausible in 1969 when the screen version of “Cactus Flower” was first trotted out, winning Goldie Hawn an Oscar for her turn as the girlfriend. It was based on the Tony-winning stage play, which itself was based on the French stage play, which makes sense. After all, if anyone knows what to do with a sexy farce it’s the French.
Still, the movie is a good fit for Aniston. One of her gifts, which director Dennis Dugan, a long-time Sandler collaborator, exploits in a good way is her ability to look as believable in a shapeless, off-the-rack shift and sandals as in a body-hugging, off-the-shoulder mini and stilettos. But ‘ and this is the big one that most of Hollywood doesn’t get since they keep casting her in one failed romantic comedy after another ‘ he also understands that while she’s hot, she’s not smokin’ hot, as in mouth-drooling, pulse-racing, temperature-raising hot. Her on-screen kisses and clinches are more sisterly and sincere than sexy. Maybe she’s a slow burner, but at least on screen, no one has figured out yet how to light that fire.
All of those girl-next-door, punch-you-in-the-arm-if-she-likes-you qualities make a good comic match for Sandler, though, who’s got the whole not-sexy thing going too. His nerdy naughty-but-nice persona has proved appealing to males and females alike coach handbags outlet , and coupled with his mumble-funny self-deprecating patter, it has made him a box-office billionaire ($3 billion and counting), which means Hollywood will let him do whatever he wants. And that is what happens here.

Jean Dujardin deserved his Palme D’or for his captivating and wonderful performance. Where to start…this film is so clever, so beautifully crafted, so mesmerising. The lost art of the silent film is once again brought to life and that era is impressively recreated, whether it be the acting style, the sets, the locations (shot in Hollywood), the shimmering black and white photography. It is obvious to see that the people behind L’artiste respected that era of film making and wanted to recreate the magic with some modern touches ( I won’t spoil them) and totally succeeded. I saw this in Cannes at an 8.30 am press screening and was totally entranced. I cannot wait to see it again!

The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1931 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film is itself a silent film and in black-and-white. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered.
Director Michel Hazanavicius had been fantasizing about making a silent film for many years, both because many filmmakers he admires emerged in the silent era, and because of the image-driven nature of the format. According to Hazanavicius his wish to make a silent film was at first not taken seriously, but after the financial success of his spy-film pastiches OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies and OSS 117: Lost in Rio, producers started to express interest.

The forming of the film’s narrative started with Hazanavicius’ desire to work again with actors Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, Hazanivicius’s wife, who had starred in the OSS 117 films. Hazanavicius chose the form of the melodrama, much because he thought many of the films from the silent era which have aged best are melodramas. He did extensive research about 1920s Hollywood, and studied silent films to find the right techniques to make the story comprehensible without having to use too many intertitles. This weekend, the wife and I attended the 1st annual Telluride Horror Film Festival. This film was the festival’s big hit. An indie slasher film spoof about two scary looking hillbillies who are mistaken for ‘Deliverance’ type rednecks, this one had the audience falling out of their seats laughing. The premise is familiar and way overused, college kids go camping in the woods, meet Tucker and Dale who have just spent their life savings on their new West Virginia ‘vacation home’.
After an incident on the lake where the kids believe Tucker and Dale have kidnapped one of the students, they proceed to kill themselves in unique and hilarious ways trying to save her. This could have been a one trick pony that fell flat, but clever writing, comic timing, and a decent cast turned this into a fun ride. If you’re a fan of the Horror genre but don’t care for slice em’ dice em’ (unless it’s tongue in cheek), you’ll love it. This one has cult classic written all over it.
While those lucky enough to nab tickets to the opening night of the 58th Sydney Film Festival were snuggled into the State Theatre to watch Joe Wright’s arthouse action-flick, Hanna, those less fortunate ‘ or perhaps just more depraved ‘ were amped up for this absurd homage to 70s exploitation films. On the basis of the consistent gasps and laughter from the packed house, few were left disappointed.
In his introduction, festival co-programmer Richard Kuiper called the film ‘sleazy’. This is an understatement. Hobo with a Shotgun is insane. Completely, bat-shit insane. Well directed and surprisingly well made, this is the movie Machete wanted to be ‘ the perfect homage to those grimy grindhouse films that became ‘video nasties’ in the 80s.

To be fair to Robert Rodriguez, Machete actually had a plot ‘ almost too much plot ‘ whereas Hobo’s is contained neatly in the title. Brilliant Dutch actor Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Batman Begins and Ladyhawke among many others) puts in a sterling performance as the disgruntled hobo who dreams of buying a $49.99 lawnmower so’he can cut his lawn (or something). He finally snaps when the seedy violence that engulfs ‘Hope Town’ becomes too much, and takes up arms to enact brutal vengeance against the grotesque thugs ‘ and corrupt cops ‘ that rule the lawless slum.

She also believed it to be impossible to make a film due to Renesmee, writing that an actress could not play her because she is a baby that has complete awareness,
